Dive Theory CourseWare Descriptions

Diver training is the process of developing skills and building experience in the use of diving equipment and techniques so that the diver is able to dive safely and have fun.

Not only is the underwater environment hazardous but diving equipment can be dangerous when used by the untrained; there are many unexpected problems that the new diver must be taught to avoid. All Divers need practice and a gradual increase in experience to build their confidence in their equipment and themselves, to develop the skills needed to control the equipment and to respond safely when they encounter difficulties.

In the Physics section buoyancy laws and computations are covered, how sound, light, and heat act underwater, the impact of pressure, volume, density on both flexible and non-flexible containers and the main laws of physics that govern the physics of SCUBA diving and instruction.

Topics evaluated are:

  • Buoyancy
  • The problems associated with Nitrogen
  • The Gas Laws
  • Why are those laws important to divers?
  • Gas laws
  • High altitude diving
  • Light and sound
  • Sound
  • Heat loss in water

In this section we cover the issues associated diving physiology on the human body. Also covered is the Knowledge of how water pressure impacts our bodies, what can happen, why it can happen, how to recognize symptoms, and what to do in case of an accident. But it also includes things that can happen even before you go underwater.

Topics evaluated are:

  • Vertigo
  • Barotraumas
  • Shallow Water Blackout
  • Oxygen Toxicity
  • Carbon Monoxide Toxicity
  • Nitrogen Narcosis
  • Decompression Sickness (DCS)

Covered are the general skills needed for diving and evaluating the environment for diving. We also cover skills and commonly encountered problems as well as medical emergencies.

Topics evaluated are:

  • Evaluating dive conditions
  • Gearing up for a dive in open water
  • Making entries and exits through mild surf
  • Commonly encountered problems
  • Descending/ascending in open water

We cover open-circuit scuba, diving cylinders and diving regulators. The fundamental issues of diving equipment used by divers and how to trouble shoot basic problems. There are other important pieces of equipment that make diving safer, more convenient or more efficient.

Topics evaluated are:

  • Regulator function
  • Alternate air sources
  • Thermal protection
  • In-water stabilization and movement
  • Gauges
  • Trouble shooting
  • Tools
  • Valves
  • SCUBA cylinders

Covered are the Dive tables and Electronic Dive tables that are used to determine how long you can safely stay under water at a given depth, both for the initial dive and for subsequent dives.

Topics evaluated are:

  • First dive
  • Residual nitrogen after a dive
  • How to plan for the second dive
  • How to back into surface interval time using the dive tables
    • Safety stops
    • Emergency Decompression
    • Air travel after dives
    • Altitude diving
    • Multiple dive rules
    • Cold water dives
